Platinum Tray Vase

Platinum Tray Vase
Handmade by Matthias Kaiser, 2019

Measures: Width 26 cm / 10,24 in; Height 28 cm / 11,02 in

This conceptual vase consists of a tray with low rim and a central hollow stem.
It was fired with the aid of an elaborate support structure to prevent warping and allow the stem to hang vertically during the firing process. Made from unrefined iron rich stoneware clay from the Czech republic, its grainy surface counterbalances the glossy platinum finish. It has been fired three times. The entire, rather large, surface of the piece is coated with a platinum overglaze containing actual platinum. In use, the hollow stem can be filled with water and a flower or twig can be displayed dramatically against the tarnished mirror-like tray.
