With their project about Viennese gas stations, art historian Sebastian Hackenschmidt and photographer Stefan Oláh have devoted themselves to a peculiarity much neglected by architects and city-planners: While the typical American gas station has long since spread world-wide, its Viennese counterpart testifies to the survival of a distinct and tender European metropolitan variety which nestles up against apartment buildings, occupies the small gaps between buildings, hides in courtyards or positions its pumps somewhere on the curbstone. The exhibition presents some of the highly aesthetic photographs which document the phenomenon of the Viennese gas station; at the same time we’ll celebrate the release of the publication of "Twentysix Viennese Gasoline Stations" which directly relates to Ed Ruscha’s famous artist’s book "Twentysix Gasoline Stations", published in 1963.
Sechsundzwanzig Wiener Tankstellen is the 143rd book project by Roma Publications and will be distributed through Idea Books. Individuals can order directly from the Roma Publications webshop.

On the occasion of the ViennaDesignWeek 2009 KlausEngelhorn and Design&Art present the exhibition LOVE DESIGN – An Exhibition about the multifaceted relationship between design and emotions of all kinds, as Love, Sexuality, Eroticism and Pain.

What do emotions, eroticism, and sexuality have to do with furniture, accessories, and lights? If you desire to explore the multifaceted relationship between love and everyday objects – then step right into the KlausEngelhornDepot.
The show "Love Design" introduces the viewer to the complex relationship between Design and emotions: Well known designers were commissioned to reflect on the role of love, eroticism, and sexuality by the Parisian Gallery Exquise Design. The extraordinary result can now be seen and experienced at the KlausEngelhorn Depot. The exhibition presents an exclusive selection of unique objects that were especially created to intensify erotic experiences and to increase the sex-appeal of our daily life.
KlausEngelhorn and Design&Art presents Love Design – a presentation of exquisite works of art from the fields of light, furniture, and accessories by such outstanding artists as bkm, Matteo Cibic, Claassen & Partner, Matali Crasset, Frédérique Daubal, Stephanie Davidson & Georg Rafailidis, Adam Farlie, Bjorn Franke, Romain Gnidzaz & Marie Lambert, Florence Jaffrain, Andrea Knecht, Elke Krystufek, Lachaert & D’Hanis, Arik Levy, Morgane & Quentin, Pupsam, and Robert Stadler. The show encompasses all important themes of interpersonal relationships like love, relationship, communication, sexuality, lust, pain etc. The objects on display range from stimulating love accessories fashioned out of silicone to a night light with hidden sex toy, from hot pink yoga balls to a kit box which contains utensils to feign a hot love affair (i.e. lipstick traces, bondage materials, scratch and bite marks, etc.).
Additionally, the “Icicle” love toy by Claassen & Partner providing the natural pleasure of stimulation and eroticism will be presented for the very first time.

Der berühmte Sacco der italienischen Designer Gatti, Paolini und Teodoro zählt zu den bekanntesten Designobjekten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Als leichtes, bewegliches und erschwingliches Möbelstück in meist poppigen Farben traf der Sitzsack 1968 den Nerv der Zeit: Er rebellierte gegen konservative Verhaltensweisen und vermittelte seinen Nutzern ein Freiheitsgefühl, das mit den Studentenprotesten und gesellschaftlichem Aufbruch verbunden war.
Vierzig Jahre später sitzt die Protestgeneration von 1968, die Mobilität, Spontaneität und Flexibilität propagiert hatte, selbst in den Chefsesseln der Konzerne, Parteien und Institutionen – wo sie nun selbst die kapitalistische Marktwirtschaft zementiert. Gebrauchsgegenstände mit Geschichte sind die Möbel von PRINZGAU/podgorschek. Der Rahmen eines alten Trampolins wird zum Tisch, die Spagettischachtel ohne Innenleben zum Stuhl oder die Türklinke von Max Bill wird unter dem Titel ”und max geht weiter” zum praktikablen Gehstock.” (multiple erstmals aufgelegt im o.k. Since the 1960s, contemporary artists have transcended and redefined traditional relations between materials and form by means of the experimental, often seemingly formless use of a variety of materials. As a first, the exhibition “Formless Furniture” shows that the rule “form follows material” was also applied – and still is – in the design of everyday objects: to this day, designers playfully oppose the so-called good form and the marketing of conformity in living environments.
